Island Functional Medicine was founded in 2020 by husband and wife team Dr. Virgil Tanizaki and Dr. Kalin Suzuki, with a shared vision of redefining the healthcare experience in Hawai‘i.

Having grown up locally, they saw firsthand the need for a more comprehensive and preventative approach to medicine, one that goes beyond treating illness to truly supporting long-term health and vitality. They envisioned a space where patients could receive high quality, evidence informed care in an environment that felt welcoming, calming, and intentionally designed.

With this in mind, Island Functional Medicine was created to thoughtfully bridge conventional and integrative medicine. By combining science based treatments with a holistic perspective, their goal has always been to provide care that is both deeply personalized and grounded in clinical excellence.

From the beginning, their mission has been to build a practice that is not only professional and efficient, but also genuinely compassionate and patient-centered. They believe healthcare should feel collaborative, supportive, and empowering where patients are active participants in their own wellness journey.
